Louisa County, VA

One of our many readers asked this… 😉

“Hey Mike..there was 2.0 aftershock in Louisa County, VA earlier today (about a half hour drive from Richmond). Did that show up on your seismograph?”

Let’s see… According to The Daily Progress, the tremor occurred at 6:35 PM Wednesday 1/9/2013. That is EST (or 18:35 Military Time) so you add 5 hours for UTC (Universal Time) that would be 23:35 UTC….

This tremor could be any of the little blips just past the red arrow. Our station is around 550 miles (885Km) away from Mineral, VA. The magnitude was “only” 2.0 so, even though the locals got a rude wake up call, the shock waves have weakened and blended with all the other waves that pass under the farm.

I see Mineral (and the surrounding area) got a good shaking in August 2011 with a 5.8. Those memories would have made me even more nervous with this “little 2.0”.

To those of you that have never felt an earthquake…..It will haunt you for some time. We forget that the ground beneath us is not at all solid and it will move. It’s just a question of when and how much.

Thanks for asking, Dianne!  I learned a lot with this one.

Thanks! I remember the 5.8 last summer very well. It felt like a train running through the front yard. One of the schools in Louisa was seriously damaged and didn’t reopen for months. Scary indeed. I can’t imagine how it must feel to experience an 8 or 9 as I understand it’s not a linear scale….

Oh, I guess the 5.8 was summer 2011 as you said. We’ve experienced lots of aftershocks since then though so it seems more recent. Some of the aftershocks have seemed worse to me than the original quake, depending on where I was at the time (inside, outside, in car).
